What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a program that works on its own. It reads messages, looks up information, makes suggestions and moves things forward. An agent does not just answer questions the way a chatbot does, it carries out tasks. What separates it from automation is that it copes with situations that were never defined in advance.

Selecto builds agents that handle one clearly bounded task without tiring: reading incoming requests for quotation, pulling invoice data into the accounting system or answering online store customers at night. The human decides, the agent carries it out.

Work agents: AI where the work happens

A work agent is an AI agent that operates in the company own channels, such as Teams, Slack, Telegram or email. Selecto builds work agents on the OpenClaw and Hermes Agent platforms: the agent remembers earlier conversations, learns how the company works and handles the background work.

OpenClaw is the most widely used open source agent platform in the world. Hermes Agent is the newer platform from Nous Research, which builds itself a permanent memory and develops its own skills as it is used. Both are self hosted, which means the agent and its data run on your own server instead of sitting behind an outside cloud service.

This is exactly why so many companies want an OpenClaw or Hermes agent of their own. And this is exactly where most of them hit a wall: installation, security, building the memory and keeping it all running take skills that few companies have in house. We handle the whole chain. We install the platform, connect it to your systems, build the agent a role and keep it in service.

Voice agents answer by speaking

A voice agent is an AI agent that talks with the customer by speech, on the website or on the phone. Selecto builds voice agents on the company own knowledge: the agent knows the products and services, answers around the clock without a queue and serves customers in dozens of languages.

Voice is the best channel when it is easier for the customer to ask than to search. In an online store, a voice agent replaces the moment where a customer cannot find the right product and leaves. On the phone, it answers when nobody else has time.

Chatbots handle the repetitive questions

A chatbot is an assistant installed on a website or in a messaging channel that answers in writing. Selecto trains its chatbots on the company own content: they handle the repetitive questions, pass the complicated cases to a human, and say plainly when they do not know the answer.

The strength of a chatbot is speed and a low threshold. It is often the first agent project, because it is quick to deploy and the benefit shows immediately.

Automation handles work that repeats the same way every time

Automation is a programmed workflow that moves data from one system to another without a human. Selecto builds automations on the n8n platform among others, and directly on top of the interfaces when no ready made connector exists. Automation does not need AI: it follows rules defined in advance and does it without errors.

Automation is the right choice when the process is always the same. It is cheaper to build and safer to run than an agent, because there is nothing left open to interpretation. When an order comes into the online store, automation takes it to the ERP system, updates the stock level and sends the customer a confirmation.

We will say this plainly: if your problem is solved by automation, we will not sell you AI on top of it.

Agent or automation, which one fits you?

The rule of thumb is simple. If the rules of the work can be written down on paper in full, it is automation. If the work requires reading, interpretation or judgment, it is an agent. Automation moves the order into the system, while an agent reads a messy email and works out what the customer is actually ordering.

When the work requires reading and interpretation

Agent

An agent reads a messy email and works out what the customer is actually ordering.

In most companies the best answer is a combination. The agent handles the interpretation, automation handles the transfers. In processing requests for quotation, for example, the agent reads the message and picks out the essentials, after which automation takes them to the quotation system and notifies the salesperson. In a Selecto review we go through your processes and tell you what is worth automating, what is worth an agent and what should be left alone.

Where does an AI agent fit best?

An agent fits best the work that repeats often, loads people down and requires reading or interpretation but not demanding decisions. The most typical places are sales background work, the first line of customer service, financial routines and looking up information in the company own systems.

Practical examples of work that agents handle

  • Reading requests for quotation and pulling out the details needed for the quote
  • Checking incoming invoices and suggesting the accounting entries
  • Answering customer questions on the website and by email
  • Preparing sales meetings: customer data, history and suggestions ready in advance
  • Compiling reports from several systems on request
  • Recording orders from email into the ERP system
  • Internal knowledge search: the agent answers questions about instructions, contracts and documents

If your situation is not on the list, it does not mean an agent would be no help. Tell us where the time goes and we will tell you whether it can be automated.

Which tools are agents built with?

Selecto builds agents and automations on the most widely used platforms in the field: OpenClaw and Hermes Agent for work agents, n8n for automations, and Microsoft tools when the company already works in a Microsoft environment. As language models we use the best ones available at the time, such as the models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The choice of platform is always made to fit your environment, not our habits. We do not lock you into one technology, and we always tell you why we picked what we picked.

What we have built

Sales agents for an international service company

The sales team got two agents in Slack with a permanent memory of past conversations. The agents prepare customer meetings, look up the background and run deeper analyses on request. Nobody had to learn a new tool, because the agents came to where the team already was.

A voice agent for an industrial online store

On the website of a company selling lubricants, the agent answers customer questions by speech or text in 33 languages. The agent knows the product range and guides the customer to the right product without anyone picking up the phone.

Your data stays under control

Selecto agents run on Selecto servers or in the customer own environment, not inside a third party black box. Customer data is never used to train language models, and processing follows the requirements of the GDPR. You always know where your data is and what the agent does with it.

This is usually the first question we hear, and with good reason. An agent handles internal company information, so its platform and its security have to be in order before anything is connected. We go through security in the review before we build, and we document what the agent has access to and what it does not.

What is the difference between an AI agent and automation?

Automation is a programmed workflow that follows rules defined in advance and moves data from one system to another. An agent reads, interprets and copes with situations that were never scripted. The rule of thumb: if the rules of the work can be written down on paper in full, it is automation. If the work requires reading, interpretation or judgment, it is an agent.

Where does the agent data live?

What is the difference between a chatbot and a voice agent?

Where should an agent project start?

With a review. We go through your processes and tell you what is worth automating, what is worth an agent and what should be left alone. If your problem is solved by automation, we will not sell you AI on top of it.

What takes the most time in your company?

Tell us where the working hours drain away and we will say plainly whether it is worth handling with an agent, with automation or not at all. We do not charge for the review.
